Establishing systemic school reform is not an easy task. The challenges are apparent, or perhaps failure becomes inevitable for those who adopt the reform. This chapter aims to explicate the case of lesson study for learning community (LSLC) in an Indonesian secondary school and the role of agency in school reform. In doing so, we analyze the historicity of schooling system and lesson study development Indonesia. The account is derived from the authors collective experiences. An ecological approach is employed to elucidate the context in which LSLC develops and agency is achieved. The study reveals that the school has achieved cultural elaboration amidst the prevailing discourse of bureaucratization and neoliberalism. However, realizing visionary reform also urges achieving structural elaboration in order to nurture collegial and collaborative culture in the school. © 2019 selection and editorial matter, Atsushi Tsukui and Masatsugu Murase; individual chapters, the contributors.
