Abstract

The aim of the research is to describe and analyze the students’ mathematical thinking ability in solving the PISA standard questions. This research uses qualitative method. There are 8 of the Junior High School students in Jember who are high order thinking involved and tested with the questions based on Program for International Student Assessment(PISA) standard. The qualitative data are obtained through interview and observation. The data were analyzed through the application of data reduction and data presentation, leading to the study’s findings and conclusion. The findings of the research are: (1) Using mathematical thinking in solving the PISA Standard questions can improve the reasoning ability of the students, (2) Identifying the level of the students’ mathematical thinking is needed to help the students in developing their mathematical thinking ability and to improve the level of PISA acquisition scores, (3) The students’ mathematical thinking ability is fairly good, however still needs to be guided by the teachers in order to strengthen their understanding, especially in the Convincing process. © 2019, Institute of Advanced Scientific Research, Inc.
