Abstract

In English as a Foreign Language (EFL) countries, reading is an essential language skill involving various skills and processes. It helps students understand the meaning of the texts and could ultimately promote their success in English learning. Reading material is one of the most significant factors influencing reading development. Studies have shown that authentic reading materials could benefit EFL reading. Moreover, task-based instruction prioritises authenticity and effectively promotes learners’ reading comprehension. This study aims to explore the development of task-based reading material tailored for Chinese learners via the ADDIE instructional design model, which consists of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation and provides a structured framework to create effective educational materials. During the process of material development, tasks including pre-reading, main reading, and post-reading activities to foster language learning are designed. This chapter concludes by discussing the implications of teaching and learning EFL in China and offers suggestions for further studies. © 2026 selection and editorial matter, Muhammad Kamarul Kabilan, Mohd Iqbal Ahamat, Utami Widiati, and Jasper Kun-Ting Hsieh; individual chapters, the contributors.
