Student difficulties when constructing a hidden bridge to solve dynamic event problems

Abstract

This study examines the difficulties of students when constructing hidden bridges when solving problems of dynamic events that require covariational reasoning. This research used an explorative qualitative approach. The 40 participants of the Mathematics Education Department, Malang State University, Indonesia. The participants were given a test with a problem of construction of pictorial of dynamic events. The participants were invited to think about the process of construction pictorial, and they were interviewed again to validate the information. The results of this study revealed that 75% of students were unable to solve the problem correctly. Students cannot coordinate information on source representations which results in key information to construct target representations that cannot be constructed. The main cause of this is the lack of reading ability resulting in students being unable to understand the problem well. © 2020 Author(s).
