Multicultural identity engineering and historical multi-ethnich city in Gresik: Socio-cultural analysis communal space

Abstract

Gresik is an example old-city of the history an early cities on the north coast of Java which developed into a big city, as well as the big cities in Java today. Gresik developed into a trading city, a center of economic and cultural civilization, as a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic city. Commonly the fundamental problem in multi-ethnic cities which are the multicultural environments are stability and dynamics of their spaces, especially the communal spaces as the important aspects of urban space structures. This paper described a spatial and architectural morphology. A communal space morphology also includes the social-cultural aspects accompanying. Results of the study showed: 1) the morphological pattern dominated by multi ethnic settlements of the Arab, Chinese, Dutch, and the native of Javanese and Madurese, 2) the building typology is form adaptation of colonial buildings according to the background of ethnic Chinese, Arabic, and Javanese 'pesisir', 3) the regional land use are residential buildings with entrepreneurial activities, economic buildings and small offices, worship buildings, and cleric tombs, and 4) the concept of communal space based on a mixture of Islamic religious ritual interest and economic entrepreneur activities. © IAEME Publication Scopus Indexed
