The present study attempts to investigate effective EFL teacher educators from the perspective of student teachers. For this purpose, a survey design was employed to examine student teachers' perceptions regarding the characteristics of effective teacher educators using four attributes, namely: subject matter knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, organisation and communication skills, and socio-affective skills. The questionnaire was administered online to 334 student teachers at the English Education Department. The data was analysed descriptively and the findings revealed student teachers have different perceptions on each attribute of effective EFL teacher educators. Several attributes were found to be comparatively more important than other attributes. The results of the study may enhance teacher educators' awareness concerning what makes them effective from the perspective of student teachers and improve their teaching quality. © 2020 Primrose Hall Publishing Group.
