Abstract

Life-Based Learning (LBL) is an innovative pedagogical approach in higher education that bridges theory and practice, preparing students to address real-life challenges in an increasingly complex world. This chapter explores the role of LBL in equipping students with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in the Society 5.0 era. LBL focuses on developing students’ adaptability, critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving abilities by integrating real-world issues into the curriculum. It emphasizes experiential learning through methods such as problem-based learning, project-based learning, case studies, and professional experience programs, all of which engage students in active, meaningful, and interdisciplinary learning. Higher education institutions must adopt this dynamic model to ensure that students are not only academically proficient but also capable of applying their knowledge in diverse social, technological, and environmental contexts. The chapter discusses the integration of science, technology, and humanities within the LBL framework, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary learning in solving global challenges. Additionally, it emphasizes the need for educators to adapt their teaching strategies to foster independent, agile, and creative learners. By preparing students to navigate the complexities of the twenty-first century, LBL helps them become proactive contributors to society and agents of change. The chapter concludes by asserting that LBL is essential for producing graduates who can think critically, collaborate effectively, and drive innovation in a rapidly evolving world. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2026.
