Abstract

This chapter examines the initiatives of KAFEIN (Indonesian Film Scholars’ Association) to promote gender equality and social inclusion (GESI) perspectives within Indonesian tertiary film education. KAFEIN gathered data on the extent to which film study programmes in Indonesian higher education incorporate GESI perspectives in their curricula and infrastructure. The data shows that such a perspective is rarely considered, although there is a dire need to address sexual violence in higher education and rampant gender-based and other minority-identity based discrimination and violence in the film industry itself. The findings call for the immediate adoption of GESI perspectives in film education curricula and infrastructure. The project’s goal is to create a future generation of Indonesian filmmakers who prioritize safety, equality, and inclusion. © 2026 selection and editorial matter, Edwin Jurriëns, Jemma Purdey, and Novi Kurnia; individual chapters, the contributors.
