Technological developments and increasingly rapid social movements cause arise of various problems, so individuals are prepared to have skills that are able to survive and solve problems globally. The learning process on coral reefs topic has integrated 21st century skills are critical thinking skills, but students's critical thinking skills are still low. The learning needs to utilize the environment as a source of learning that presents real problems in the environment so that it can help improve critical thinking skills. This study aims to determine the effect of local potential-based monographs as teaching material to improving students's critical thinking skills in coastal ecology subject. This study uses a pre-experimental design with One-Group Pretest-Posttest design. Pretest and posttest data critical thinking skills were analyzed using Paired Sample T-Test. Implementation results show that there is an effect of learning using teaching materials based on local potential to improving students's critical thinking skills. The indicators of critical thinking skills that are analyze, apply, evaluate, use data, and synthesize respectively from the pretest to posttest data have the difference in successive increases of 14.28%, 24.64%, 17.5%, 32.5 %, and 21.79%. © 2021 Author(s).
