Abstract

This paper highlights the ability of secondary school students to provide a scientific explanation to support their option of the multiple-choice question. Sixty-four students from a public secondary school in Malang participated in the study. A multiple-choice test with free responses was employed. The data were analyzed descriptively in light of the scientific concept of acid-base properties of the salt solution as approved by the scientific community. This study uncovered a range of students' explanations to back their options from a narrow argument to a robust and deep understanding. © 2021 Author(s).
