Scientific literacy is one of the 21st Century Skills needed to learn every student to face global challenges. Scientific literacy in Indonesia still low. Proper learning that contains indicators of scientific literacy is needed so that student literacy can be increased. The purpose of this study is to test the effectiveness of the module based on problem- based learning in improving the scientific literacy of S1 Biology Education students in the Biotechnology course. The method used is a pre-experimental design using pretest and posttest science literacy in one test class. The population of this study was students of Biotechnology course at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang with a sample of 29 students. The results obtained were analyzed and interpreted using N-gain score. The result was tested using an N-gain score and showed an average of 0.57 which means the module was quite effective in increasing student's scientific literacy. Therefore, it can be concluded that the problem-based learning module effectively improved student's scientific literacy. © 2021 Author(s).
