Abstract

Pacitan Beach, a rapidly growing tourism destination in Indonesia, faces escalating threats from coastal hazards, including tsunamis, erosion, and tidal floods. Despite these risks, standardized disaster preparedness programs for tourists - a transient yet vulnerable population - remain absent. This study developed and quantitatively evaluated a targeted coastal disaster mitigation education model integrating ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction (Eco-DRR) principles. Using a mixed-methods approach, 66 first-time tourists were randomly assigned to an intervention group (60-minute training) or a control group (standard safety information). The intervention combined: (1) visual demonstrations of Pacitan's green belt as natural coastal protection, (2) participatory evacuation mapping using tree-lined routes, and (3) community-led simulation drills. Pre- and post-intervention assessments via structured flashcards and timed evacuation drills revealed statistically significant improvements (p < 0.001, Cohen's d = 1.43), with an 82% increase in evacuation route recall and a 37% reduction in inappropriate responses during hazards. The model's emphasis on local ecology (e.g., coastal vegetation's protective role) proved remarkably effective, with 78% of participants retaining key knowledge. These results demonstrate that a concise, nature-based education framework can significantly enhance tourist preparedness while promoting environmental stewardship. The study provides a replicable, low-cost model for other high-risk coastal destinations, bridging critical gaps in tourist-focused disaster risk reduction. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
