This study aims to identify the critical thinking skills of students by the indicators of focusing on a question, analysing arguments, asking and answering challenging questions, judging the credibility of a source, assessing observation reports, making and considering decisions, defining terms and judging definitions, and making a decision. This study used a descriptive research design with a survey method. The subjects were 154 students of XI grade, which are high school's students at Situbondo and Besuki, East Java, Indonesia. The measuring instrument of critical thinking skills used in the units of redox reaction and electrochemistry is the instrument developed based on developmental design, which adapted the twelve indicators of critical thinking, as stated by Ennis. The obtained data were then analysed using the critical thinking skills indicators of Ennis. The result utilized students' right and well-reasoned answers on the multiple-choice questions and the right answers to the essay questions. The finding of this study shows that the critical thinking skills of students in Situbondo are deemed low. © 2021 Author(s).
