Abstract

Characterization of crystal surface topography using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) is very important in crystal growth study since this instrument can reach Angstrom lateral resolution. Other than that, the AFM can also work well in air or liquid. Thus, this instrument is very powerful to observe how the unit cells organize themselves during the crystal formation. However, very small crystal size (less than 2µm) and curved crystal surface make it difficult for the AFM to scan the surface in-situ. On the other hand, large crystal size and relatively flat crystal surface ease the cantilever tip to scan it during the growth. Besides the structure, the crystal size and shape depend on the synthesis method. In this paper, we reviewed aluminophosphate (AlPO) synthesis methods, such as hydrothermal and ionothermal methods, and their influences on resulted crystal morphology. The AlPO framework structures under review are AFX, AFO, ATS, CLO, and LEV. These structures were chosen due to their unique nano-pores and extensive use in industry. © 2021 Author(s).
