Abstract

This chapter discusses governance and innovation issues related to forest conservation and biodiversity in developing countries, focusing on institutional, political, and technological aspects. It does not address biology or culture, but rather focuses on policy disjunction, poorly coordinated inter- sectoral collaboration, and institutional fragmentation. Challenges include scarcity of information and technological resources, complexity of regulatory frameworks, political myopia, and data scarcity. This chapter also discusses emerging governance innovations, including adaptive technologies, open- source monitoring, cross- border conservation diplomacy, and others. This multidisciplinary approach, complemented by case studies, informs the chapter’s recommendations for building resilient, inclusive conservation systems that are strategically supported by data. Ilsa emphasizes the need for active participation by policymakers, academics, and practitioners in the Global South working toward sustainable conservation strategies.
