The mathematical reasoning in terms of emotional intelligence

Abstract

The ability of students to motivate themselves is part of emotional intelligence. Along with that emotional intelligence has an important role in students' mathematical reasoning. The purpose of this study is to describe the process of mathematical reasoning for grade VII students based on the level of emotional intelligence. This research using descriptive qualitative research. The test method uses an emotional intelligence test in the form of a questionnaire consisting of 40 items, then the mathematical reasoning process test contains 1 number of questions that have been validated by 2 validators, namely expert lecturers and teachers in the field of study. Data analysis included (a) data reduction, (b) data presentation, and (c) conclusion and verification. The procedure of this research is as follows: (a) the preparation phase, (b) the data collection stage, and (c) the data analysis stage. The results of this study are (a) the reasoning process of students who have high emotional intelligence can make guesses, draw conclusions from statements, carry out mathematical manipulation, and check the validity of an argument correctly, (b) the reasoning process of students who have medium emotional intelligence is still wrong in submits an allegation, incomplete in concluding statement, carrying out mathematical manipulation, but problem-solving is still wrong and cannot check the validity of an argument, (c) the reasoning process of students who have low emotional intelligence cannot submit an assumption, draw conclusions from a statement. © 2021 Author(s).
