Abstract

The learning process of synthesis of nanomaterials requires the knowledge and understanding of nanosafety in order to minimize the health risk and accident. The aim of this research was to determine the risk level in nanomaterial laboratory and determine the risk control needed. The risk assessment was carried out by determining the exposure rating and hazard rating of each laboratory to obtain the risk level, based on risk matriks. Exposure rating was obtained from the duration of working with nanomaterials. The longer the laboratory users doing nanomaterials synthesis, the greater the potential of nanomaterials exposure to their body. Meanwhile, the hazard rating is obtained from the level of nanomaterials laboratory users’ knowledge of nanosafety and the condition of nanosafety facilities in the laboratory, because to minimize and prevent the risk of hazard, the knowledge of nanosafety is needed and the nanosafety facilities play a role in protecting the laboratory users from hazard risk. The results of this assessment indicate that the risk level in both laboratories is classified as moderate risk level. Risk control that can be done is to apply the hierarchy of controls. © 2023 selection and editorial matter, Samsul Ariffin Abdul Karim.
