Economic development in Indonesia causes numerous environmental issues. Prevention efforts to reduce ecological quality reduction can be started from the education level. Adiwiyata is an environmental management program issued by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Culture of The Republic of Indonesia, aiming to achieve a responsible school community in environmental protection and management through excellent school governance to achieve sustainable development. Student participation is essential to form the student environmental awareness character to ensure environmental sustainability. The program assists the school environment to remain sustainable. This study aims to determine student participation in performing the Adiwiyata program and figure out its influencing factors. The study was categorized as descriptive research using a quantitative approach in which data collection technique was tested using the Adiwiyata program 2013 questionnaire. Its validity and reliability were tested using a product-moment method of SPSS 16.0. Data analysis was performed by using the frequency distribution technique. Results showed that students participation rate in Vocational High School (SMK) of SMK 1 Singosari and SMK 6 Malang were categorized as Moderate with a value of 59.73% and 56.2%, respectively. At the same time, SMK 11 Malang is considered Good with a value of 65%. The influences factors include environmental awareness, open space and facilities utilization, extracurricular activities, creativity and innovation of the school community in forms of environmental management, and promoting environmental protection. Student participation increases because of several factors such as school governance (vision, mission, and objectives), teachers, facilities and infrastructure, parents, school communities, and stakeholders. Such circumstances are assumed to be the primary goals of the Adiwiyata school establishment. © 2022 Author(s).
