The effect of layer height and deposit orientation to surface quality on 3D printed polylactic acid (PLA)

Abstract

The manufacturing process commonly involves a variety of devices to manufacture a work piece. In terms of the 3rd revolution industry, 3D printing serves as one of the technology applications to assist humans in the manufacturing process. This study aims to observe the surface quality of 3D printed parts indicated by surface roughness for different layer height and orientation of the deposit layer utilizing Polylactic Acid material (PLA). The test method involved a 3D printer machine to build specimens. Furthermore, the surface roughness of the specimen is tested employing SurftestSJ-301 Mitutoyo device. The height of the test specimen layer is varied from 0.05 mm to 0.15 mm with the increment of 0.5 mm for each specimen test variation. Further, the layer angle is also varied from 0° to 45° with the increment of 15° for each variation. The roughness surface of the specimen is analyzed to determine the optimal design parameters. Based on the study, the highest roughness is on the Lh 0.1 mm, whereas the lowest roughness on the Lh 0.05 mm with Ra is 12.77 and 5.44 respectively. © 2022 Author(s).
