Abstract

Herbal materials are found in numerous medicines as extracts or active components of plants. Besides, many people worldwide use herbal products because of their powerful antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. In recent years, herbal products are increasingly replacing synthetic or chemical medications due to their lower side effects as compared to previous ones. The production of free radicals is the main side effect of synthetic or chemical drugs. Herbal medicines can block free radical production due to their antioxidant activities; therefore, are a proper alternative for use as antimicrobial and antioxidant agents. In the last decade, many studies have investigated the preparation of herbal antibiotic medicine with high antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. Different encapsulation technologies including nanoencapsulation have been recently recommended for improving the bio-efficiency of herbal materials. This chapter is focused on the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of herbal materials. In addition, this study also focuses on the effect of nanoencapsulation. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd.
