Abstract

Statistical reasoning is a way of reasoning statistical concepts to generate information. This includes interpreting, representing, and summarizing data. This research aims to describe the statistical reasoning of junior high school students in solving on central tendency problems. This research is qualitative research with 8 students of 8thB grade MTs Al-Multazam as research subjects who have been taught central tendency theory. The results of this study indicate that 8th grade students have various statistical reasoning abilities and divided into 4 levels of reasoning adapted from the SOLO taxonomy. The four levels of reasoning are idiosyncratic, transitional, quantitative, and analytical level. At the idiosyncratic level students' abilities are only limited to the ability to write down the data that is known in the problem, at the transitional level students can calculate the mean, median, and modus, at the quantitative level students can demonstrate the usefulness of central tendency, and at the analytical level students can analyze a measure of data centering with multiple data perspectives. Of the four levels of statistical reasoning, more than half of the students are included in the transitional level with a percentage of 54.29%. © 2023 American Institute of Physics Inc..
