This study aimed to provide trends in argumentation research in science education based on 77 articles published in various international or national journals that indexed by Thomson Reuters, SCOPUS, Sinta, or other journal indexing agencies. This study applied a content analysis method, by following three steps: searching and screening papers, generating categories, and organizing selected papers. Each article was selected using an adaptation "Paper Form Classification" by shifting the subject from the paper aspect to assessing the quality of arguments in science education. The findings of this study are the trends of argumentation research emphasized the assessment of the argument structure. The assessment was carried out by looking at how students are able to construct the structure of claims, warrant, rebuttal as a series of arguments. Furthermore, argumentation research trends were on in the field of chemistry and science and technology using qualitative research methods and descriptive analysis. This study suggests the opportunities and potential issues, especially in assessing the quality of argument that can be explored in future research. © 2023 American Institute of Physics Inc..
