Synthesis of Ferrofluid Based on Local Iron Sand by Using Double Natural Surfactants and Their Potential as Hyperthermia Therapy

Abstract

Magnetite (Fe3O4) based materials have many advantages that can be used in various fields including biomedical fields, especially when modified as ferrofluid. Until now, studies on ferrofluid Fe3O4 as a potential material in hyperthermia therapy continue to be developed with the addition of surfactants to make it more stable and maximize its performance. The ferrofluid currently being developed uses two surfactants, namely oleic acid (OA) and sesame oil (SeO) extract. Ferrofluid was characterized by XRD to determine the crystal structure, TEM was used to see the morphology of the sample, FTIR was used to determine the functional groups in the material. To determine the SAR value is done through magnetothermal characterization. The X-Ray diffraction pattern in the sample shows that the intensity of the Fe3O4 peak decreases with increasing surfactant volume, this indicates that the amorphous double surfactant has succeeded in coating the Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The test results using FTIR showed the presence of a carboxyl group (-COO) in the area of 1460 cm-1 and 1689 cm-1 as evidence that oleic acid and triglycerides of sesame oil had successfully bound to Fe3O4 and also the alkanol group that appeared in the absorption area of 1254 cm-1 showed the emergence of the lignan sesamol from sesame oil successfully binds to Fe3O4. Through a magneto-thermal study, the largest SAR value was 0.882 W/gram which has potential for hyperthermia theraphy. © 2023 American Institute of Physics Inc.. All rights reserved.
