The ability of scientific argumentation, which is a form of discourse about the reasoning process and promotes critical thinking, is needed by students in 21st-century learning. However, students still have scientific argumentation skills that are not yet optimal. Meanwhile, the use of the Argument-Driven Inquiry (ADI) model integrated with the STEM approach with Formative Assessment (FA) to overcome the low ability of students' scientific argumentation is still rarely done. The purpose of this research is to build students' scientific argumentation skills on wave material through ADI-STEM with FA. This study uses a Mixed-method with an embedded experimental design. The study was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, requiring students to learn virtually through Google Meet and WhatsApp groups. A total of 27 students from class XI acted as research subjects. In the engineering process, students make a tool called "Letari"as a solution to contextual problems. The instruments used in this research are interview sheets and wave scientific argumentation tests with a reliability of 0.622. Quantitative data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon test, N-gain, and effect size. Qualitative data was analyzed by data reduction, coding, and interpretation. The results showed that there were significant differences in students' scientific argumentation abilities after the ADI-STEM with FA learning model was applied. The large increase obtained is N-gain 0.18, which is categorized as a low increase. The level of argumentation that students can achieve on average is only at level 1 and level 2. The effect size value obtained is 3.13 in the strong category, which means that the application of the ADI-STEM with FA model in this study can be recommended to be widely applied in this pandemic. Recommendations for future research include implementing the ADI-STEM model with FA learning in real face-to-face classes, adding the "Art"aspect, and carrying out research on other physics topics, not only about waves. © 2023 Author(s).
