Abstract

The Pb2+ion adsorption process was carried out to reduce the level of water pollution by utilizing sediment as an adsorbent. The sediment contains silica which has Si-O-Si and Si-OH groups to adsorb Pb2+ions in water. Sediment was treated to obtain silica content with a high level of purity. This study aims to determine the effect of the concentration of a solution containing Pb2+ions and the contact time during stirring on its performance in the Pb2+ion adsorption process. This is in tenns of the performance of sediment silica as an adsorbent on a laboratory scale and seawater added with Pb2+ion contaminants. The research design consisted of taking and preparing sediment samples, characterization with XRF as a qualitative cation analysis to ensure the absence of Pb2+ions in the sediment, XRD to determine the mineral and oxide content in the sediment, and SEM-EDX to determine sediment surface morphology. It was followed by sediment ashing, silica purification, silica characterization with FTIR, and silica application for Pb2+ions on a laboratory scale and seawater with Pb2+ion contaminants added based on the effect of variations in concentration and contact time. The results of this study are pure silica adsorbents that are solid with white color which have a typical Si-O-Si peak and are in the wavelength range. © 2023 American Institute of Physics Inc..
