Abstract

Misconceptions are hard-to-eliminate phenomena. However, misconceptions have a chance to be minimized. This study aims to improve students' comprehension of the Chemical Equilibrium topic and minimize misconceptions that occur after learning activities that use the Learning Cycle-5E model with Multiple Representation-based Cognitive Dissonance strategy (LC 5E-MRCD). The research design used a quasi-experimental and pre-test-post-test control group design. The research samples were 32 students of XI MIPA 3 and 35 students of XI MIPA 1 at SMAN 2 Malang. The sampling was done using the simple random sampling technique. The data analysis in this research uses the descriptive statistical analysis technique. The results showed that after the learning activity, the findings of misconceptions in the experimental class (LC 5E-MRCD) is 21%. This percentage shows a lower number compared to the misconceptions in the control class (LC 5E) that reaches 32%. The results of the Mann-Whitney test show that there are differences in learning outcomes between the experimental class and the control class after the treatment. The increasing average of student learning outcomes was analyzed using the N-gain test. The results of the N-gain test show that the increasing average of the learning outcomes of the experimental class is higher than in the control class. The LC 5E-MRCD model is stated as suitable to minimize the misconception level and improve student learning outcomes regarding some essential concepts on the Chemical Equilibrium topic. © 2023 Author(s).
