Macromolecular Content Identification of Blended Microalgae Arthrospira platensis-Activated Carbon Using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy

Abstract

FTIR analysis has provided corroboration to the basic analysis of biomass for understanding their potential as a fuel feedstock. This apparatus afforded a dataset related to the organic component that would probably be volatilized, liquidized, and solidified during thermal processes. It also detailed the inorganic substances contained in the materials that potentially produced a solid residue as a by-product in the final thermal processes. This work presented the identification of macromolecular contents in the blended materials between microalgae Arthrospira platensis (AP) and activated carbon (AC) by using FTIR spectroscopy. The blended sample was provided by the route of the mixing process of both samples in a mass ratio of 100AP/50AC. Both sample mixtures were stirred together using mechanical stirring at 1200 rpm for 30 min to ensure the homogeneity of the final sample produced. The potassium bromide powder was mixed with the blended sample then subjected to the pressure to form the pellets with a transparent sheet that was appropriately used to measure the infrared spectrum. A wide range of FTIR spectrum between 4000 and 400 cm-1 is recorded in such an event. The resulted band spectra revealed the existence of three principles macromolecular contained in the microalgal sample, i.e., protein, carbohydrate, and lipid. However, for an in-depth understanding of how AC affected the structure of the functional group in the algal biomass, future work is needed for comparing this result with each parent of AP and AC. © 2023 American Institute of Physics Inc..
