Analogical reasoning of students with logical-mathematical intelligence tendency in solving trigonometry problem

Abstract

Analogical reasoning ability is an important thing in the mathematical problem-solving process. Students' analogical reasoning ability in solving mathematical problems is related to students' intelligence. One type of intelligence based on multiple intelligences theory is logical-mathematical intelligence. The purpose of this study is to describe students' analogical reasoning with logical-mathematical intelligence tendency in solving trigonometry problem. This research uses the descriptive qualitative method. The research subjects are two students of eleventh grade with logical-mathematical intelligence tendency. The data was gained by using multiple intelligence test, analogical trigonometry problem test, and interviews. The research results showed that students with logical-mathematical intelligence tendency could pass through all of the analogical reasoning stages. Since the students can identify the critical information on the source and target problems although they take several times to visualize the problems. They can also infer that there was an identical relationship between source problem and target problem by using numbers logically, conclude that there was a structural similarity in the source problem and target problem solution, and apply the structure of source problem-solving to target problem-solving through correct calculations. © 2023 Author(s).
