The development of the education system that requires using Indonesian as a unifying language of communication in higher education has led to a new polemic in learning. Because communication still uses the local language as the difference in social status between lecturers and students due to local cultural beliefs. This study will discuss the use of that chosen language and identify the reasons for its use in interactions. A case study for cultural anthropology qualitative research was used for this study through the language use problem faced by the lecturers in higher education in suburban. The eight selected lecturers who habitually use mixed languages are chosen as the respondents of this research based on self-selection. Data in this study were collected using interviews within two weeks of interaction because of the pandemic. Using the local language is still the main priority of lecturers to communicate in classroom learning because the interaction is active. And again, the social status described by the use of local languages in language teaching at universities still has extreme dominance, so the difference in social equality between lecturers and students is still apparent due to local cultural beliefs. © 2023, Angelo Pontecorboli Editore.
