Aims: The endophytic Aspergillus is an alternate source of chemical compounds with interesting therapeutic properties. Most endophytic Aspergillus species are capable of generating secondary metabolites, such as polyketide compounds, alkaloids, terpenoids, etc., which exhibit intriguing antibiotic properties. The overarching goal is to contribute to addressing the challenge of antimicrobial resistance by investigating the efficacy of these compounds against resistant microbial strains. This review was aimed to enhance our understanding of the pharmacological potential within endophytic Aspergillus fungi, laying the groundwork for future advancements in antibiotic discovery. Methodology and results: The method involved utilizing the Publish or Perish application to search for articles containing keywords Aspergillus, endophytic fungus, antimicrobial, antibiotic, antibacterial and antifungal from 2018 to 2023. This review exclusively focused on compounds derived from Aspergillus endophytic fungi, which were isolated and evaluated for their antimicrobial activity. Identified articles were then organized by species and categorized based on their antibiotic potential with MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) values of <10 µg/mL and inhibition zone diameter (IZD) values of?>20 mm. An exhaustive examination revealed 13 compounds from various Aspergillus endophytic fungi with significant antibiotic potential. Conclusion, significance and impact of study: The review identifies three most potent Aspergillus endophytic fungi species: A. nidulans (producing versicolorin C and isoversicolorin C), A. flavus (yielding kojic acid) and A. terreus (synthesizing cowabenzophenone A). This finding emphasizes the potential for diversifying antibiotic resources, contributing to ongoing efforts in addressing microbial resistance and enriching antimicrobial research. © (2024), (Universiti Sains Malaysia).
