Abstract

Purpose. This study aims to design a language learning model to help overcome the expressive language barriers of Indonesian ASD students. The model was developed using Skinner's behaviorist approach. Afterwards, the model was trialed on ASD students to determine its feasibility and effectiveness. Methods. Through a developmental research design with the ASSURE model, the Expressive Behavior was successfully created through five procedures. Nine Indonesian ASD students were studied as test subjects of the model using a quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest design. Data in the form of test results and responses were collected and analyzed as a consideration for model improvement Results. The result is an Expressive Behavio that has five syntaxes, namely stimulation, imitation, naming, writing, and appreciation. The learning domains are speaking and writing and are specific to students with autism expressive language barriers. The model was found to be feasible and effective in helping speech and learning to write. The feasibility test was conducted by language learning experts, language teachers, and two samples of ASD students. The effectiveness test was calculated through calculating the score difference between the pretest and posttest. The Expressive Behavior has been tested and proven effective in intervening expressive language learning outcomes with a 43.5 percent. Conclusions. Based on the pilot test results, there was an increase in the average score from 62 to 89, an increase of 43.55 percent. The response of students and teachers when using the Expressive Behavior was also positive. The teachers felt helped when teaching speaking and writing. The model was found to be effective when used for autism students who have language barriers. © 2025. Open Access.
