Scallop shell waste is abundant in East Java, Indonesia, but no one has used it as raw material for hydroxyapatite. Therefore, the synthesis of hydroxyapatite using the wet chemical method with scallop shell as raw material attracts attention for research. Hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) is a material that has bioactive properties, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and has the same tissue as bone, so it can be used as bone implant material. In this study, hydroxyapatite was synthesized from scallop shell waste using the co-percipitation method with the addition of a sonication process and without a sonication process. The hydroxyapatite samples were characterized using XRD, SEM and FTIR. The XRD results showed that the hydroxyapatite sample with sonication had a single phase and small crystal size compared to the hydroxyapatite sample without sonication. The SEM results showed that the hydroxyapatite sample with sonication had an ellipse-like grain shape. The XRF results showed chemical composition of the HA sample with the addition of the Sonication process having fewer chemical elements other than calcium and phosphate when compared to the HA sample without Sonication. The FTIR results showed that the hydroxyapatite sample with sonication and without sonication had almost the same absorption spectrum, but the hydroxyapatite sample without sonication had several different peaks. © 2024 American Institute of Physics Inc..
