Physical properties of fresh thin bed mortar using polyvinyl acetate-based additives

Abstract

Autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) has been widely used in construction as masonry because of its lightweight and higher productivity in installation than normal brick masonry. For installation, AAC requires a thin layer of mortar from the store-bought dry mix for bedding to provide adequate bond strength on the masonry. This research aims to propose a new composition of cement mortar for thin bedding with the addition of polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) to improve its bonding feature. This research is fully conducted in experimental settings and follows testing procedures recommended by ASTM and Indonesian codes. This study was to compare the physical properties characteristics of store-bought thin bed mortar (TBMM), cement-based thin bed mortar (TBMS), and innovated thin bed mortar (TBMI). Laboratory test showed that the substitution of 15% PVAc to cement can improve the workability of the mortar. The addition of PVAc to TBMI can slow down the hardening time of mortar. © 2024 Author(s).
