Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulation on H-Darrieus Type Axis Wind Turbine Vertical Prototype with Variations in Rotor Diameter and NACA Shape for Optimal Turbine Performance

Abstract

Electrical energy is one of primary commodities needed by Indonesian population, with usage reaching 300 Twh per year. Wind, water, solar, and geothermal energy can be used for alternative energy. Wind is one of energies that can fill Indonesia's electricity needs with help of wind turbines. Wind turbines can convert kinetic energy of wind into mechanical energy in turbine rotor. VAWT H-Darrieus type is used because its great potential in surrounding environment. H-Darrieus has 2 to 4 blades at same angle. The aerodynamics of H-Darrieus are very good to take advantage of wind speeds at low speeds of 2-9 m/s and enable to accept wind pressure from various directions. This study to determine performance of H-Darrieus with given variations in rotor diameters of 15, 30, and 45 cm and turbine blades using NACA 0020 and 0012. The research method is simulation using Computational Fluids Dynamic software applications. Wind speed data was obtained from data collection in South Beach area of Sendang Biru with average of 5 and 6 m/s. After being simulated using ANSYS CFD software, data obtained was analyzed using Taguchi method. The results of this study indicate that rotor diameter and shape of NACA airfoil greatly affect performance of VAWT H-Darrieus type with each variation of 45 cm and NACA 0020 efficiency value is 21%, power coefficient is 0.13 and turbine power is 1,8 Watts. From the results obtained, it is known that contribution of rotor diameter is 49% and shape of NACA airfoil is 48%. © 2024 American Institute of Physics Inc.. All rights reserved.
