Limit: Identification of Student Epistemological Obstacles

Abstract

Limit material has been taught since high school. However, for most students, limit is considered a difficult material. This is because the concept of limit is abstract and difficult to apply in everyday life. Research related to epistemological obstacle in mathematical problems has been carried out a lot, but studies on the topic of limits have not been carried out much. This research aims to identify epistemological obstacle experienced by students when being given questions related to limit. This research use descriptive qualitative approach. The research data was obtained from the results of tests, interviews, and observation sheets. The research subjects were 10 students who attended a short semester at a university in Malang City. Based on the type of epistemological obstacle, four subjects were selected for interviews. Data analysis is conducted using the stages of the APOS mental mechanism (Action, Process, Object, and Schema). The results show that the students experienced obstacles in symbols representation, obstacles in language representation, obstacles in generalization, and obstacles in intuitive. The biggest obstacle is the symbol representation. The research results show that language representation obstacle is due to the complexity of language in mathematics. Further research is suggested to use a gamification-based limit learning design that can overcome obstacles in language and symbols representation. © 2024 American Institute of Physics Inc..
