Abstract

The integration of BESS into power grids has become increasingly essential for enhancing grid stability, particularly in regions with high renewable energy penetration. This study presents a comprehensive approach for the optimal placement and sizing of BESS within the Southern Sulawesi grid, Indonesia, a region with significant renewable energy potential and unique grid characteristics, focusing on improving voltage stability. The proposed method utilizes a hybrid of GSO and PSO algorithms to determine the optimal locations and capacities of BESS units by minimizing the VSI. The optimization framework incorporates various grid constraints and dynamic load conditions to ensure robust and reliable system performance under different operational scenarios. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the Hybrid GSO-PSO algorithm in enhancing voltage stability while ensuring efficient BESS deployment. The findings indicate that the Daya Substation is the most suitable location for BESS installation, with an optimal capacity of 9.7 MW. The implementation of BESS at three selected locations results in an average Voltage Stability Index (Lmn) improvement from 0.034532 (pre-installation) to 0.034027 (post-installation), signifying a notable enhancement in voltage stability. These results highlight the effectiveness of the proposed optimization strategy in improving grid resilience and stability, making it a valuable solution for power systems with high renewable energy integration. © 2025 Praise Worthy Prize S.r.l.-All rights reserved.
