Abstract

In learning mathematics, the errors are often experienced by students are caused by mixing two learning materials that are close each other. This phenomenon is known as interference. One of the materials that are close each other is directly proportional and inversely proportional. At school, the materials of inversely proportional is given to students after the materials of directly proportional. The aim of this study is to study the interference in solving the problem of directly proportional and inversely proportional. The subjects in this research are 49 students of grade VII. This research method is descriptive qualitative. Previous research that discussed the occurrence of interference only focused on one type of interference. No one has discussed the two types of interference that occur at the one time. Therefore, this research discusses proactive and retroactive interference that occurs at one time. The result of this research indicates that there are students experience both proactive interference and retroactive interference at one time when students solve the problem of directly proportional and inversely proportional. © 2024 American Institute of Physics Inc..
