Walking Through the Cosmos: Using the Gallery Walk Method to Deepen Students' Understanding of Earth and Satellite Concepts

Abstract

Science education is a form of education that teaches various concepts or phenomena related to the universe. Most students' science scores are still low due to their poor understanding of concepts. The low level of comprehension has been attributed to the discrepancy between students' predominant learning styles and the teaching methods used. To overcome this limitation, the objective was to improve conceptual comprehension by implementing the gallery walk method in seventh-grade science classes on the topic of Earth and its satellites. To this end, a quasi-experimental design with a non-randomized control group with pre- and post-tests was used. The hypothesis was tested using an independent samples t-test with a significance level of 5%, yielding a p-value of .005, which was interpreted as a significant difference in the improvement of conceptual understanding between the experimental and control groups. This result was supported by Cohen's effect size analysis, which indicated a value of .89, thus evidencing a strong influence of the gallery tour method on the students' conceptual domain. The gallery walk strategy effectively engages students' potential, particularly through hands-on activities, thereby increasing their activeness, enthusiasm, and ultimately their conceptual understanding. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
