Abstract

This chapter provides a systematic review of research for multimodality in English education in Indonesia. Grounded within the social semiotics theory of communication, this paper examines the evolution of multimodality research in the context of EFL/ESL/TESOL in Indonesia. The review included articles on multimodality in the English language education context in Indonesia published between 2013 and 2023 in nationally ranked journals. In the analysis process, the data were arranged systematically to be categorized based on the content for further synthesis and interpretation. In our observation, we found that multimodal theories and methodologies in pedagogy were applied into different areas of investigations, including textbooks, picture books, digital resources, and other multimodal aspects in their integration into different language skills. Hence, the majority of the multimodal studies in Indonesian contexts revolve around their application in pedagogy. The chapter points out the relevance of raising students’ critical thinking abilities in order to cope with multimodal text complexity in different contexts. The conclusion of the study points towards directions for future research, such as the importance of more qualitative research into the use of multimodality in pedagogy, and the possibility of multidisciplinary uses, e.g., in the field of arts, medical studies, and social sciences. © 2026 selection and editorial matter, Subhan Zein and Fuad Abdul Hamied; individual chapters, the contributors.
