Domestic wastewater generated from human activities that occupy a building requires treatment before being discharged into the environment to prevent pollution and maintain environmental quality. Domestic wastewater discharged into the environment should meet the quality standards of Permen LHK No. 68/2016. This study aims to overcome the problem of wastewater treatment on campus, especially of the Graha Rectorate at the State University of Malang (UM), using Horizontal Subsurface Flow Constructed Wetlands (HSFCWs) with the addition of intermittent aeration. Experiments in this study were conducted using a laboratory scale. The treatment system consists of an equalisation tank, HSFCWs equipped with an aeration device placed on the surface and bottom of the tanks, and HSFCWs without aeration. The results showed that treatment using the HSFCWs system with the addition of intermittent aeration was able to reduce the concentration of campus wastewater pollutants. HSFCWs with the surface aeration removed COD up to 65,56%, BOD of 87,30%, TSS of 90,02%, and TC of 92,32%. HSFCWs with the bottom aeration removed COD up to 64,97%, BOD of 87,57%, TSS of 92,10%, and TC of 90,98%. HSFCWs with no aeration could remove COD up to 64,97%, BOD of 87,12%, TSS of 90,79%, and TC of 75,78%. The results revealed that the addition of aeration improved the quality of wastewater treatment using HSFCWs, as dissolved oxygen can enhance the oxygen concentration in wastewater and microbial proliferation in the process of degrading organic pollutants. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
