Abstract

In the gamut of English language teaching in the Indonesian context, the role of non-formal educational institutions has not received as much attention as the formal educational contexts. This chapter (re)brings to light the importance of the roles of non-formal educational institutions within particularly the Indonesian context by revisiting the legal status of non-formal education. As such, a quick survey of relevant studies around non-formal educational institutions is presented. This survey, with a specific touch on the teaching and learning of English, highlights the fact that serious attention from seasoned academics has been absent from the realm of English language teaching in Indonesia. In light of the nation’s growing interest in English, the implications for the need for teacher professional development is identified. The chapter underscores the notion that English language teaching in Indonesian non-formal educational institutions is a fertile ground for research. The chapter, therefore, puts forth prospective directions for future research. © 2026 selection and editorial matter, Subhan Zein and Fuad Abdul Hamied; individual chapters, the contributors.
