BENGA: A Gamified Mobile Application for Qur'an Learning in Early Childhood

Abstract

This study aims to develop and implement the BENGA mobile application as an alternative learning media that is adaptive and relevant to support the learning process of reading and writing the Qur'an. The BENGA application was developed using the SAM (Successive Approximation Model) model with four development stages: preparation phase, iterative design phase, iterative development phase, and final evaluation. BENGA application is composed of three main features: introduction of hijaiyah letters, connecting letters, and breaking letters. The letter connection feature is equipped with gamification assistance to increase student involvement in learning through a level system and direct feedback. The BENGA application trial was conducted with three teachers and 30 students using a qualitative approach of interviews and observations. The test results show that the BENGA application can be well received for student involvement and motivation in learning to read and write the Qur'an. Further development of the BENGA application is in the letter-breaking feature, with the addition of automatic correction and audio as reinforcement for the learning evaluation process. © 2025 IEEE.
