Interactive Learning Of Indonesia Wayang Kulit With Slam-Based Markerless Augmented Reality

Abstract

Wayang kulit is a cultural heritage full of life values, both from the characters performed and the storyline of the wayang performance itself. Wayang Kulit has existed and developed rapidly since the 10th century. Wayang Kulit, one of Indonesia cultural treasures recognized by UNESCO as a Cultural Heritage, is currently facing a tough challenge. The decreasing number of wayang kulit performances has resulted in a decrease in the number of spectators. This also causes a lack of public knowledge, especially among the younger generation, regarding wayang kulit. Related to the decreasing socialization and implementation of digital technology related to the Indonesian wayang kulit. To address this, we developed WayangEDU, a mobile application that employs markerless Augmented Reality (AR) based on the SLAM approach. WayangEDU serves as an interactive educational medium to teach users about Wayang Kulit characters and stage props, providing a novel learning experience. We conducted both AR Performance and User Satisfaction tests. The AR performance results demonstrate that WayangEDU runs smoothly on all tested Android devices, particularly mid-range and higher-end models. User Satisfaction tests showed significant improvements in application consistency, error handling, and search functionality. These findings indicate that the AR-based WayangEDU application effectively bridges the gap between traditional culture and modern technology, supporting the preservation of Indonesian Wayang Kulit heritage. © 2025 IEEE.
