Social Media as a Learning Media in the Basics of Analytical Chemistry Course: Analysis of Student Needs

Abstract

Chemistry is an abstract, conceptual, and procedural science. One of the problematic materials with these characteristics is the Basics of Analytical Chemistry. Therefore, there is a need for media that can support the realization of learning concepts. This study aims to analyze the needs of students in taking the Basics of Analytical Chemistry course, as well as the media needed to overcome these problems. The method used in this study is qualitative and quantitative descriptive research. Data was obtained through initial observation, and questionnaires were distributed to 60 students who had taken the Basics of Analytical Chemistry course at the Universitas Negeri Malang. Initial observations show that the learning resources and media used still need improvement. Based on the results of the questionnaire analysis, it is known that the achievement of learning the Basics of Analytical Chemistry is quite good. However, students still face some obstacles. Most students answered that the most challenging material was the qualitative analysis of cations caused by too much memorization. Almost all students expect learning media to help visualize learning material. Fifty-one students said they wanted audiovisual-based learning media. Nearly all students have WhatsApp and Instagram social media. All students expressed the need for the development of social media-based learning media.
