A Smart Application for Indonesian Sentence Structure Correction to Assist Hearing-Impaired Students

Abstract

Hearing-impaired students often encounter significant challenges in expressive writing, particularly in adhering to grammatical conventions. To address this issue, we developed a smart assistive application called Indonesian Sentence Structure Corrector, designed to support hearing-impaired students in composing grammatically correct scientific reports. The application was developed using a waterfall model, based on a comprehensive needs analysis and an investigation into the literacy challenges commonly faced by hearing-impaired learners. Key features of the system include: (1) detection of spelling errors, (2) correction of sentence structures following Indonesian grammatical patterns - SPOK (Subject- Predicate-Object-Complement), SPO (Subject-Predicate- Object), and SPK (Subject-Predicate-Complement), and (3) transformation of active and passive voice structures. From a software engineering standpoint, the application runs smoothly across platforms, demonstrating robust functionality and user-friendly interface performance. Validation by 3 experts revealed a correction accuracy of 95%. Furthermore, testing involving 30 users indicated a high level of satisfaction, particularly regarding the application's usefulness. Most respondents strongly agreed the application facilitates the construction of grammatically correct sentences. Specifically, 86.7% of respondents also strongly agreed that the application effectively supports hearing-impaired students in understanding proper sentence structures. These findings indicate that the core objective of the application - to assist hearing-impaired students in composing and understanding grammatically sound Indonesian sentences - has been successfully achieved. In the future, the application holds promising potential for integration into inclusive educational settings, enabling broader accessibility and supporting literacy development among diverse learners. © 2025 IEEE.
