Financial Literacy for Small and Medium Enterprises: Conceptual and Social Structure of Publication Trends Using a Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract

Financial literacy involves understanding how to plan and manage personal or business finances and making informed financial decisions. The objective of this paper is to examine the scientific literature on financial literacy, focusing on publications, authors, journals, and citation patterns to identify trends in this field. The method a bibliometric analysis was conducted using the Scopus database for articles published from 2002 to 2024. A total of 539 articles were analyzed with tools such as VOSviewer, Publish or Perish, biblioMagika, and biblioshiny. The findings show that over the 22-year period, there has been a consistent increase in publications, particularly from 2009 to 2012, linked to the growing research in computer science, social sciences, and business management. The International Journal of Electronic Government Research emerged as the leading source of publications. The limitations/implications of research exclusively used the Scopus database, excluding articles from other sources. The analysis focuses only on published literature, which may not represent all research outcomes. The practical implications this study offer valuable insights for policymakers and governments to enhance governance effectiveness and efficiency. They also guide researchers in exploring under-researched topics. The originality/value this article uniquely addresses financial literacy in SMEs, a topic not previously detailed in the literature. The study underscores the growing relevance of financial literacy in recent years and its significance in financial management within SMEs. © 2025, SRAC - Romanian Society for Quality.
