Purpose: This research aims to comprehensively map the research trends in microbiology literacy within scientific literature using a bibliometric approach. We focus on publication trends, contributing authors and countries, research collaboration, and research gaps. Design/methodology/approach: This research uses a bibliometric approach assisted by RStudio software. Findings: The research trend in the field of microbiology literacy is a dynamic topic and has experienced an increase in the last 10 years, especially in 2018 and 2021. The United States and India have become centers of high publication productivity. Research limitations/implications: The database used in this research is Scopus publications, so further development of other types of databases is needed. Practical implications: Although research on microbiology literacy is well established, there is still room for further development, especially in the focus on health literacy with collaboration involving more countries. Social implications: The information in this study helps researchers, educators, and policymakers identify potential areas of further research. In the future, it can become a reference for developing microbiology literacy. Originality/value: This research presents a report on publication and research trends in the field of microbiology literacy in the last ten years. © 2025, Emerald Publishing Limited.
