Abstract

Interest in chemistry is a crucial factor influencing how learners understand and apply scientific knowledge in everyday life. Yet students' interest in chemistry remains relatively low, as the subject is often seen as abstract and less connected to real-life contexts. Integrating ethnoscience and green chemistry can bridge this gap by making chemistry more relevant, meaningful, and engaging, thereby enhancing students' interest to learn. This study was conducted to explore the development of a Chemistry E-Magazine on the topic of reaction rate integrated with ethnoscience and green chemistry. The research and development (R&D) approach using the Lee and Owens model, which consists of five stages: assessment and analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. This study demonstrates the development of a prototype Chemistry E-Magazine on the topic of reaction rates, integrated with ethnoscience and green chemistry, as an effort to improve students' interest in learning chemistry. Designed as a web-based medium accessible anytime via browsers without download, the E-Magazine features intermezzo, science corner, ethnoscience, and green chemistry sections arranged alternately by concept. The prototype was found to be valid, readable, and effective. Validity was confirmed through expert evaluations of content and media, ensuring that the material, language, and design aligned with learning objectives. Readability was supported by students' positive responses, indicating that the medium is easy to use, communicative, and engaging. Effectiveness was evidenced by a significant increase in students' interest in chemistry learning after using the E-Magazine. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
