Corrosion is defined as the destruction of a material from its constituent atoms due to surrounding biochemical reactions, which decrease the quality of steel so that it becomes damaged quickly. Steel is one of the most widely used structural materials in coastal areas such as in shipbuilding, submarine pipelines, power plants, and docks. Corrosion has negative impacts on infrastructure, energy, and the economy. This study aims to determine the biochemical character and the potential of EPS production from CaCO3 precipitating isolates from the Southern Coast of Malang. The evaluated biochemical test conducted in our study are cell shape, Gram reaction, oxygen demand test, EPS production test, and antibiotic resistance test. Gram stain test indicates all bacteria are Gram-negative bacteria. CaCO3 precipitating bacteria based on oxygen demand test were divided into two groups: obligate aerobes and facultative anaerobes. All isolates have an inhibition zone and are categorized as sensitive after antibiotics resistance test using ampicillin and chloramphenicol. EPS production test showed only isolates WP2 A3 and WP2 A5 that could produce EPS above 3 mm. © 2025 American Institute of Physics Inc.. All rights reserved.
