Critical thinking ability is a problem-solving process that involves reasoning, analyzing, providing arguments, evaluating, interpreting thoughts, and drawing conclusions based on the obtained data. This study explores student’s critical thinking skills in solving geometric plane shapes problems. The research method is descriptive qualitative. The data is obtained at one of the elementary schools in Malang City. The research subjects were three students from grade V of elementary school who were selected using purposive sampling. The research instruments used were the critical thinking skills test and interview guidelines. The research findings showed that students who have critical thinking skills in the high category almost fulfill all aspects of critical thinking. Students can present answers systematically. Students can understand what is asked in the problem and provide conclusions to clarify the answer. However, students are still not careful in understanding the known information in the problem so the final results are not correct. This condition shows that the focus and overview aspects have not been fulfilled optimally. Students with a moderate level of critical thinking ability can already carry out the solution strategy with the right formula. However, students still do not fully understand the information in the problem. Students are also still not optimal in providing conclusions. Meanwhile, students with low critical thinking skills can fulfill the situation aspect, but other aspects still need improvement. © 2025 American Institute of Physics Inc.. All rights reserved.
